CMP: Michael Light Burned Jeffrey Pine Forest and Tephra Flow Looking Southeast, Hwy. 120 at Right, Mono Basin, CA 2006

The picture is in black and white. The light in the picture is directly ahead and above. The picture is blown out in the middle towards the top. There are trees in two thirds from the bottom of the pictures on the left and then the tree line smoothly increases to about one eighth from the top on the right and then becomes a dense forest on the top. The parts not covered by trees are barren, a desert.  Besides the bottom right and the dense forest mentioned before, all the trees appear to be burned. The picture is taken from a helicopter and is therefore a few thousand feet up.  The picture is taken early in the morning so the shadows are long and makes the burned trees look denser than they really are. There is a road, highway 120, running from the bottom left of the picture to the middle right of the picture. The picture is cut in two by what looks like a cliff. It starts at the about one tenth from the top left of the photo and then gradually goes down to one fifth from the top right. Because of the long shadows the picture has a sense of high-speed motion. Everything is in focus. There does not appear to be much if any motion blur, this means that a fast shutter time was used. This also means that a high ISO was used. One left top quadrant of the picture there seems to be a canyon in a ‘y’ shape. To the right of the ‘y’ canyon is a lake. To the left of the ‘y’ is a river that continues from edge of the left of the quadrant and then continues to the top of the right side. In the burned trees there are patches of barren earth where trees never grew. The exposure of the whole photo is good. A high dynamic range shot would have help more as there would not have been a blown out portion in the middle of the picture. The picture is below.

My 3 Favaorite Photos from my 2000

This is my favorite picture because I was just messing with my cousin by trying to take a picture of her.  I think this picture is beautiful because it was unexpected and in focus.

This is my second favorite picture because it is of a sunset, but not in the traditional sense. It shows that the engineering building is beautiful, in contrast to the stereotype of engineering being cold and it is in focus.

The above picture is my third favorite because it was one of the pictures that I tried to set the camera's shutter speed and use a tripod. This shot was the best of about 30 of the same subject.

Book 6: Louis Faurer

This is the picture on the cover of the book. I really like it because it remind me of steam punk, which I am a fan of. I also like that everything around the man is blurred, but the man is in sharp focus. This book like the ones before it have many candid shots,  but also there are some that seem posed. The one above seems that it was supposed to be candid, but the man saw Faurer and decided to pose for him.

Book 5: Pages from a Childs Documentary

The cover of this book captured my attention as it was a hand drawn ice cream by a child. The was full of pictures of children and their drawings. The above picture I liked because of the big smile of the girl. She seems to be genuinely happy, the way only a child can be. I guess it made me miss childhood and how easy life was.

Book 4: Snapshooters by Thomas Consilvio

The above picture reminded me of many family outings I had as a child. I would always be bored while the adults talked just like the young girl on the right. She is the reason that I chose this picture, I felt empathy towards her. The book as a whole seemed to be full of technically good snapshots.

Book 5: Photographer by Walter Rosenblum

This book is again akin to my taste for old photographs of everyday situations. While there are some extraordinary pictures of World War II on D-day, most are just of normal people. The above photograph drew my attention because the children in it are posing as adults. They both seem to have an air of maturity about them. I think they are brother and sister. I just love peers into people lives of the past.

Book 2: Unter Die Schere Mit Den Geiern! (With the Scissors Under the Vultures!) by Diederich and Grubling

This book was a great find for me. I was just pulling random books like I always do, then I found this. A book with German about the World War 2. These seem to be after the war as they are anti-Nazi. I like the picture above because it shows that as one dictator falls another can take his place, but he should be stopped before he becomes powerful, hence the black square.

Book 1: Film Stars By Eve Arnold et al.

Dustin Hoffman and Mia Farrow are in the above photo. I chose this book it had pictures of movie stars from the past. The above photo was particular interesting because I watch Dustin Hoffman today and like to see how he looked like before. I can see that the uni-brow was once fashionably acceptable. I am a sucker for old photos.

HW3: Sophie Calle. Suite Vénitienne. Jean Baudrillard. Please follow me.

This photo caught my attention because it was in focus and because of the size of the man’s glasses. I am sure when this picture was taken they were more in style. Now they are coming back into fashion.  I also enjoy the blowout on the top right, it makes it seems as though the curtain behind the man is burning.

HW2: Douglas Huebler - Variable, etc.

I chose this set because I thought these were the best in focus shots. I like that in four of the five photographs there are normal people going about their day.  The Disneyland shot is nostalgic to me because I remember going there with my parents. The one on the top right is different from the rest in that it has more dark tones and the people seem to not be happy. I always enjoy looks into normal life from the past.

HW3: Steven Shore - Survey

This photograph struck me as both open in how big and empty the street was but also narrow and claustrophobic when you look at the building flanking you on each side. I also like that this photograph is clearly from many years ago as the cars are quite boxy with hard lines. The last time I went to a big city it looked just like this, but with newer cars, so in a way this photograph shows that cities have not changed at all in the last few decades. I enjoy how the buildings in the middle of the picture are cut off; it gives me the impression that they keep going up forever.

The house above is small and reminiscent of a fairytale house. It is in the middle of forested area as in many fairytales. Those two facts made me choose this picture, but upon closer inspection the illusion is broken when you see the power lines on the left of the picture. These betray the time period of this picture and now it is firmly set in the 20th century. The house looks like it is trying to hide behind the trees and looks timid. The chimney adds a great contrast of red to the green, as does the roof, it looks like Christmas.

I enjoy the candidness of this shot. I enjoy looking at people for their uniqueness, some are tall, some are short, some are men, and some are women. During real life it is rude or creepy to stare at someone, but in photography I like that you can look at people in pictures for extended amounts of time. You keep finding more details the more you look. The photograph has a lot more things to look at, but I always find people more fascinating that any inanimate object. From a brief glance I can tell the woman is not married, is in her late 20s to early 30s, and is right-handed.
